Enzo G. Castellari (°1938) maakte naam met een reeks genrefilms waarmee hij virtuoos met de regels van de B-film speelde. Hij onderscheidde zich door een persoonlijk gevoel voor montage en het gebruik van slow motion in actiescenes (verkregen door het draaien met drie camera’s die op verschillende snelheden opnamen). Castellari is vandaag vooral bekend omdat Tarantino zich voor zijn “Inglorious Basterds” baseerde op Castellari’s gelijknamige oorlogsfilm, hoewel het resultaat in niets op
het origineel leek. Eind jaren ‘60 brak Castellari door met spaghettiwesterns, een genre dat hij met “Keoma” (1976) een laatste klassieker bezorgde. Maar hij zal voor altijd verbonden blijven met gewelddadige politiefilms of poliziotteschi die treffend het politieke klimaat van de Italiaanse “Anni di piombo” (Loden Jaren) ventileerden. Bovendien was hij de vader van de postapocalyptische science fiction à l’italienne met
guilty pleasures als “1990: The Bronx Warriors” en “Escape from the Bronx”.
